Softball Superstitions

Anyone who has been an athlete can probably tell you they had pregame superstitions. A superstition is a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief. There are 2 huge superstitions in softball. The first is not stepping on the chalk before games and the second is not stepping on the field before a game.

My senior year of high school my softball team had been doing very well, I think we had been on a long winning streak and our whole team was very superstitious. Every game each player was required to do their hair the same way. We were crazy, but it appeared to work.

I find myself following the same routine on game days. On the first day of games I wear a purple sports bra and a pink sports bra on the second day. When I drive to the field I have to listen to two songs, It's a Great Day to Be Alive and Salt Shaker. My nails have to be painted. I will paint them the same color until I do not do well. Another must for me is wearing a bow. It really ties the look together. After I play well I eat the same thing for breakfast as I had eaten that day. I will continue to do my hair the same after good games. I HAVE to wear earrings on game days, it doesn't matter what kind of earrings they are. I can't let my ears be naked. When we fly for games I have to touch the right side of the plane doorway with my right hand while stepping on the plane with my right foot. I have to take a game day picture with my best friend before a game.

I asked a bunch of softball players about some of their game day superstitions and these are their responses...

- Having freshly painted nails
- Doing the same hairstyle every game after playing good with that hairstyle
- Eating the same thing for breakfast because of the performance the player had the last time
- Not allowing the bats to cross in the dugout
- Sleeping with their bat the night before a game
- Wearing the same socks, sliders, and sports bras for each game
- Stepping into the box with the same foot every time
- Putting socks on right foot then left foot and then shoes right foot then left foot
- Lucky piece of beef jerky in the right pants pocket
- Playing with the same q-tip used to fix her make up that morning in her back pocket.
- Showering before the game
- Taking extra reps during warm ups even when your last rep was good
- Using someones bat who is hitting well
- Wearing the same bow
- Taking a pregame picture with the same teammate
-  Pitching the same sequence of pitches before the inning
- Dragging the dirt in the box before stepping in
- Eating the same snack before games
- Having the same throwing partner in the outfield between innings
- Wearing eye black
- Keeping a dead craw fish as a team
- Taking a nap before games
- Doing a handshake with the same teammate before games
- Wearing dirty uniforms
- Having a specific order of putting on helmet and batting gloves
- Looking at a specific spot on the field before the pitch
- Chewing gum
- Praying before the game
- Writing a word on your wrist
- Playing for someone and writing their initials in the dirt before every game
- Avoiding specific cheers that have not been successful
- Having a specific bat routine every time they step in the box

Athletes are weird and we all have our own unique tendencies. As long as they working, who can blame us?
